UNIVERSITY HOSPITAL of  NORTH STAFFS UNISON BRANCH SECRETARY BACKS TUSC PUBLIC MEETING

STOP SELL-OFF OF NHS CANCER AND END OF LIFE CARE IN STAFFORDSHIRE!

Rob Irving UHNS Unison Branch Secretary says,

The University Hospital of North Staffs Branch of Unison would like to send this message of support to Stoke and Newcastle Trade Unionist and Socialist Coalition in their bid to halt the tendering out of cancer and end of life care in Staffordshire by the CCGs. This is just one more step towards privatisation of the NHS as we know it, and a move which we must fight every step of the way to prevent another nail being hammered into the coffin of our public services.”

This government is using the negative publicity around Stafford Hospital and the dissolution of Mid Staffs Foundation Trust as an excuse to use the most vulnerable patents of this county as a political football. Those suffering from the debilitating and life threatening effects of cancer should not be used as pawns in the Tories increasingly hostile, and thinly veiled attacks on  our NHS.

This kind of contract can only lead to further fragmentation of services at a time when the patients of Staffordshire desperately need continuity and stability above anything else.  Taking these services out of public control and into the hands of private firms will not benefit patients, but will instead lead to a sector where end of life and cancer care are delivered not based on best practice, or in the interests of the patients, but will instead be driven by profit.

It is frankly disgusting that there is potential for companies to be making money out of people when they are at their most needy. Cancer and end of life care, has to remain a fundamental part of the NHS structure where we can be confident the treatment our patients receive is of the highest quality, and driven by providing care and compassion, not by lining the pockets of private companies driven by greed.”
